The Reel Thing film making group was established in response to the need for more creative programs for people with limited physical abilities who were cognitively high functioning.

Beyond the Square was also keen on narrowing the focus of the group to those that identified as having a physical disability so as to really focus on adaptive technology and ways of making the film making process more accessible and inclusive for all members of society.

Each series of workshops aims to give the participants ownership over the story they create in collaboration with a workshop facilitator through an ideas generation and story boarding phase and also depending on where participant’s interests lie they also get the opportunity to experience behind the scenes work such as camera operation, directing and sound operation. They are also given the chance to act on screen and also an insight into post production through learning about the basics of editing.

The Reel Thing 2011 was facilitated by Tim Baines & Alison Richardson and worked with participants from Northcott disability services and Wesley Uniting Care.
