Innovation. Expression. Creativity. Empowerment.
Beyond the Square is Riverside Theatre’s dedicated performing arts program for people with disability. It is the only mainstream theatre company in Australia to have a dedicated program committed solely to the development of opportunities for people with disability in the arts.
Beyond the Square is about working outside the norm, thinking laterally & creatively. It is about embracing difference and challenging preconceptions.
We are funded by Parramatta City Council and ArtsNSW.
Beyond the Square works across three broad areas
1. Community Development
Beyond the Square is about developing a sense of community. A place where people feel they belong and have a say. It is about opening up new social networks through performance workshops and events.
2. Artistic Development
Beyond the Square is interested in developing opportunities for people with disabilities who are serious about further developing their skills in performance & theatre making. It is about developing people as artists and providing rigorous skills based training alongside professional artists.
Beyond the Square’s outreach program aims to work with those in the community that may find it difficult to access Beyond the Square’s core programs or are wanting a more specialised program within their school or service.
